Friday Sermon 11 August 1995
Thou art not charged with guiding them to the right path for Allah guides whosoever He pleases. And whatever of your possessions you give is for yourselves provided you give not but to seek the favour of Allah. And whatever you give shall be repaid you in full and you shall not be wronged. To those poor who are occupied for the sake of Allah and are unable to move about in the land. The ignorant deems them to be free from want because of their abstinence. Thou shalt know them by their appearance; they do not beg of people with importunity. And whatever of your possessions you spend surely Allah has perfect knowledge thereof. Those who spend their wealth by night and day privately as well as publicly shall have their reward with their Lord; no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. ('The Holy Quran'. al-Baqrah [The Heifer]: 273 - 275). These verses concern financial contributions and they shed light on the various aspects of financial sacrifice in an amazing manner. Before I cover the subject mentioned in these verses I will mention the financial sacrifice offered by the Community. 2 years ago that is in '92 - '93 the financial contributions of the Community reached Rs.500000000 that is half a billion and I had expressed the desire that we soon go from millions into billions. In fact I had this desire for a long time. This year with the Grace of Allah the Community has offered contributions of Pakistani Rs.77580000028000. Now only 2 or 3 steps remain in order to reach Rs.1000000000000. A year or 2 ago I had admonished the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan that the Community in Germany has excelled you for the first time. This year again Germany is number one in financial contribution. In fact the Community in Germany has also risen from the Indo-Pak. Many from among them were far behind in Pakistan and even in offering any financial sacrifice but when the Destiny of Almighty God tied them to the principle of exodus they were transformed and transformed in such a way as to leave many of their predecessors behind. The Community in Pakistan (and others Communities) should consider this point that there are many new converts who can contribute and do not. Similarly there are many devotees who do not contribute according to the prescribed rate based on their income. There are many who have found new employment, there are many who have sought excuses to contribute less than the prescribed rate. If they are all taken into consideration then with the Grace of God there would be a marked increase in the Chanda. If one is pure of intent and is virtuous then one seeks out ways of offering it. Have the intent not to remain at the lowest level of that which Allah has required of us but to go to the level where not only that is fulfilled which is incumbent but at which one reaches optional service and seeking the pleasure of Allah. It should be our effort that those Communities which are from India and Pakistan to whom Allah had granted the precedence of being the first that they should keep to this priority. Germany is first in financial contribution, Pakistan second and America is at number 3. After them come Great Britain, Indonesia, India, Mauritius, Japan, Norway and Switzerland. Among the Communities to have offered historical contributions in the last 3 years Belgium stands out with the Grace of God. Then come France, Singapore, Thailand, Guatemala, Sierra Leona, and Suriname. The dignity of financial contribution with which the Community has been graced has no equal in the entire world. The way in which the Community is offering contributions and marching ahead and safeguarding them with much sincerity is a source of pride to look up to for the whole world. Financial sacrifice is born from faith. Financial sacrifice is the measure of faith. The faith of the Community which is on the increase all over the world is a boon to the increase in financial sacrifice. 'The Holy Quran' instructs us regarding the philosophy of charity and how we should offer up what we possess.
