Friday Sermon 18 October 1996
Acts of piety grant the strength to create a change. Pious acts grant loftiness to the good word and if unsupported by pious acts it sometimes has the opposite effect. So try to progress towards the being to whom you are too call. When you make an effort then they your words would possess the power of truth. The world always listens and has regard for the sayings of a truthful person and always. There are many who are otherwise truthful but their actions belie their words. They are otherwise truthful but they never make a true effort towards God which I am addressing because God renders such included among the liars. What more truth could there be than testifying to the truth of the Holy Prophet ﷺ but 'The Holy Quran' reveals that when the hypocrites say to Muhammad the Holy Prophet of Allah ﷺ, that 'We bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah' Almighty God says that because their actions contradict their testimony so although God knows that you are the Messenger of Allah but Allah testifies that these hypocrites are liars.* If the heart does not fully support this statement, if one's actions do not verify one's statements then even if the words are true that person become a liar. Your good words will be empowered by your actions. The weight carried by the words of a truthful person is incomparable to the statements of a liar. [Even] the minor statements made by a Godly person have the power to create a change. Many a time when the bad habits of people could not be removed through the efforts of the Companions of the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) a few sentences of the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) cut off those bad habits from that person. This is the Holy Spirit in visible form which they saw. The Holy Spirit is the term [used] for a degree of truthfulness. The truth that completely overtakes one's outer and inner being becomes so powerful that no other power of the world can compete with it. The Holy Prophet ﷺ reached a place where he fully joined his being with the Essence of Truth so that the power of truth was manifest in his person. One who imparts only knowledge cannot purify anybody because knowledge convinces the mind and wisdom convinces the hearts and this conjunction of the mind and heart is essential for self-purification. Allah Almighty granted the superior Holy Spirit to the Holy Prophet ﷺ through the people who came near him went through an astonishing transformation. The one who adopts a Divine hue is empowered to change. The Holy Spirit is essential in order to change one's environs and this can be received through Divine nearness. In order to invite to Allah it is important to create such changes in yourselves to come nearer to Allah and this would then certainly result in changes happening in your environs. The Holy Spirit is essential to changing the society of today. So bring about changes in yourselves, your wives, your brothers and sisters and do not abandon this theme until your repetitive admonishments bring about changes around you. Virtue is never born as a result of force and command only an artificial action is the result. You cannot even change your family through force and command. Coercion has never created a pure transformation in the world, apparent artificial changes have taken place but force can never interfere with the souls. Coercion can never create the beauty of the heart. I counsel you to produce such progeny about whom you would be certain that when you close your eyes they would never deviate from those paths on which you had struggled to put them on all your life. In this way a change for the better would continue to occur generation after generation which would definitely bring about a pure transformation in this country. *'The Holy Quran' al-Munafiqun [The Hypocrites]: 2.
