Friday Sermon 22 May 1998
Hearken for you are those who are called upon to spend in the way of Allah; but some among you who hold back. And whoso holds back holds back only against their own soul. For Allah is Self-Sufficient and it is you that are needy. And if you turn your backs He will bring in your stead a people other than you, and they will not be like you. ('The Holy Quran'. Muhammad: 39). With this sermon begins the annual Ijtema of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Germany but the theme of the sermon does not concern Khuddamul Ahmadiyya or the Jamat in Germany alone rather it concerns the Jamats all over the world. I have no complaint to the majority of the Jamat in Germany regarding financial contributions. The Jamat in Germany is far ahead in [offering] financial contributions. It also continues to say 'We obey' at every call. However it could be that certain listeners would consider themselves specifically addressed in this appeal and they are the ones who should pay special attention to this issue. This statement of 'The Holy Quran' is very true that those who are stingy in spending in the cause of God their niggardliness is only against themselves. Such people face economic loss along with the spiritual loss that they face anyway. Allah is merciful towards those who spend in affluence but is particularly merciful towards those who spend in the cause of God despite being less well off. But the less well off should never spend with the intention that it would be rewarded by their poverty being removed. You should instead fully purify and cleanse your intentions and keep in view the pleasure of God. If God forbid those Ahmadis of the Jamat in Germany who have been made to inherit the bounties of Allah and whose financial conditions have been made better should suspect that this Jamat runs on them and needs [their] contributions then Allah the Almighty would remove them and would substitute them with others to prove that it is only Allah who fulfills the requirements and that He would fulfill them however He pleases. The Ahadith of the Holy and Chosen Prophet Muhammad ﷺ contain faith-inspiring incidents of the financial contributions offered by the male and female Companions of the Messenger and the excerpts of His Holiness the Promised Messiah (peace be on him) express his high expectations of the Jamat regarding their financial contributions. Today it is only the Ahmadiyya Community who has joined the Companions by offering similar sacrifices. So many felicitations and congratulations to you O Ahmadiyya Community that you are mentioned the Quran, you are mentioned by the tongue of Muhammad the Messenger of Allah! You are those who the Promised Messiah has joined with the Companions by offering endless sacrifices and prayers. Whatever gratitude you offer is lesser than it and there is only one way to be grateful by being the torchbearers of this message and turning every darkness into light. This alone is my expectation from you and [my] prayer [for those] who are affiliated with the Jamat in Germany as well as those all around the world who will heard this sermon. God has graced us with an honour He has never graced to any other in the 1300 years in between. So light a flame in your hearts so that you spend whatever you have in the cause of God till your final breaths.
