Friday Sermon 11 April 1997
And it is He that accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds He knows what you do. And He responds to those who believe and work well and grants them more out of His grace; and the disbelievers will have a severe punishment. ('The Holy Quran'. al-Shura [The Consultation]: 26, 27). I had began an excerpt from the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) in the previous sermon when time ran out. The question was that if sin is a poison then why has this poison been created? The angels do not sin and the reason for their not sinning is the absence of their ability to sin. People have been created so that the capability to sin has been grounded in their nature so if then one did not sin one would have increased in imperiousness: When the immaculate Prophet says Istighfar 70 times what should we do? (Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. 1895. 'Malfuzat: i'. 3). Itisghfar is essential in order to guard [one's] impeccability from arrogance. Itighfar is to seek help from God to be safe from the probability of sinning. In reality the limit of impeccability is as far as it rests upon the stilts of Istighfar. Wherever the aspect of grandeur enters into impeccability and to the extent that it enters the realms of the subject of the ego to that extent it is sin. The Holy Prophet ﷺ continued journeying into the heights through Istighfar and that journey into the the heights continued forever. Sin has not been created for people to indulge in it but for people to achieve endless degrees through the effort to avoid it. This subject can be understood easily by thinking about the subject of disease and remedy. If the repentance is true then Almighty God overlooks the small and minor everyday stumbling and they are erased. This is the subject of pardon that follows repentance. To pardon one who is not ashamed makes them even more audacious and immoral. When God accepts the repentance of a person it would certainly result in their mistakes which are not sins but become sins in the end from lack of attention for as a result of God's pardoning them such weaknesses eventually diminish and disappear gradually. Then if they repent by truly becoming Godly people and God accepts their repentance and as a result people recognise the signs of the weaknesses disappearing in them, then the prayers of such people are granted. One of the signs of the truthful is that their prayers are fulfilled and secondly that their own faces and sayings are seen as of the truthful. The antidote born from the danger of sin is the awareness of Allah, that is Istighfar and to augment it results in the birth of such as are the servants of the Gracious One, the saints of Allah, who harbour no fear and no grief.
