Friday Sermon 3 November 1995
Allah sets forth the parable of a slave who is owned having no power over anything and whom We have provided a fair provision Ourself and he gives alms thereof privately and openly. Are they equal? Praise be to Allah! But most of them know not. ('The Holy Quran'. al-Nahl [The Honeybee]: 76). The عَبْدًا مَّمْلُوكًا ['slave who is owned'] in this verse means a person who may be financially quite affluent but is also a slave to his own wealth, entangled in the trap of the worldly life he is unable to spend anything for a good cause. This is the slavery of Satan or the slavery of the wealth of the world. As against this one who is a slave to Allah gives alms privately and openly adopting the nature of Allah and receiving an attitude that reflects His. Whereas one who has the temperament of: Wealth meets wealth stretching forth long hands Nobody asks poor Tulsidas. Such a person becomes completely negligent of the poor and no longer cares for the poor. Moreover the scale of the visible virtues of those who begin journeying towards God is always more than when they are near to Him and the nearer they draw to God the more they scale of their secret virtues increases in weight and this journey is from جَهْر ['openness'] towards secret and privacy. They prefer secrecy and what they disclose is not to promote themselves but in order to promote a passion for offering sacrifices among believers. This is also why comparisons of financial sacrifices are presented. On an individual level every person should keep making comparisons with the winners as this is something we also find mentioned in 'The Holy Quran' and among the lives of the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and as one's life progresses one should keep measuring whether one is moving away from them or drawing near to them. The Promised Messiah has explicated the spirit of sacrifice in pointing out that the financial system does not merely fulfill the needs of the Community. It also serves to fulfill the spiritual requirements of one who takes part in it. Germany is foremost this year in offering the highest financial sacrifice for Tehrik e Jadid. Pakistan is second in Number. America is at Number 3. Great Britain, Canada and some other countries follow. I especially draw the attention of Ahmadis to join the system of financial offerings because if you fail to receive some small financial offerings from new converts you will not be qualified to train them so the new converts must be included too. May Allah the Almighty enable us to fulfill the right pertaining to the spirit of making open financial offerings.
