Description
Since the last few verses mention is being made of the people of a town to whom Allah the Almighty send 2 Messengers who the people of the town rejected then Almighty God assisted them both by means of a third Messenger who said to these people that 'Our Lord knows that we have come to you as Messengers.' But these people refused to accept what these Messengers told them and actively rejected them. There is disagreement among the various commentators and scholars as to who are meant by the أَصْحَابَ الْقَرْيَةِ ['people of the town'] and who those 3 Messengers were. According to me this entire narrative is a narration pertaining to one and the same town. The 2 Messengers that were were are the Prophet Moses and the Prophet Aaron (peace be on them). The third is one whom 'The Noble Quran' has not named and kept it hidden but 'The Noble Quran' states that on the Day of Judgement that Messenger (mentioned in verse Number 21 in the words ' جَاءَ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ رَجُلٌ يَسْعَىٰ ['From the farthest part of the town there came a man running']) would say that 'O would that my people had known my position'. [1] So we do desperately need to search for his name. The Quranic statement makes it obvious that he was also a Messenger and has a great status before Almighty God. In 'The Holy Quran' there is another separate incident mentioned of a man coming from the أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ and warning the Prophet Moses of the ill intent of Pharaoh and his ministers and it took place before the Prophet Moses being granted Prophethood. That person was a dignitary from the tribe of the Pharaoh who had access to the courts and palaces of the Pharaoh and he hid his belief. But the رَجُلٌ ['young man'] mentioned in this verse of Surah Ya Sin was a Messenger of Almighty God. It seems that his was the Messenger who had cautioned Korah over his evil deeds. Korah was from the tribe of Moses lived in another village. If the themes of these verses are to be taken metaphorically then the town would mean Mecca and the coming of the Prophet Abraham and the Prophet Ishmael and additionally the Holy Messenger of Allah ﷺ being sent to them. [1] Verse 27. [2] Just then there came a man from the far side of the city running and saying ‘O Moses! Truly the chiefs are taking counsel together with the authorities against thee to kill thee therefore get thee away for sincerely I am of thy well-wishers.’ ('The Holy Quran'. al-Qasas [The Stories]: 21). 17 February 1998. © The Tahir Archive / MTA International, 2016.
