Friday Sermon 18 December 1998

Description

The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for mankind with manifest principles for guidance which distinguish. Therefore whosoever of you finds themselves in this month let them fast throughout. But whoso is ill or on a journey should do so on a corresponding number of other days. Allah desires ease for you and He desires not hardship for you so that you may complete the number and that you may glorify Allah for His having guided you and that you may be grateful.

('The Holy Quran'. al-Baqarah [The Heifer]: 186).


This verse speaks of the great month of Ramadan and prescribes fasting.  It gives different commandments about it.  The month of Ramadan also teaches gratitude and the month of Ramadan is also for the purpose of attaining the things that would enable you to continue being grateful as a result.

In continuation of the subject of gratitude which was continued in the previous sermon - Allah the Almighty states in 'The Holy Quran' that remember if you offer thanks I would certainly increase your gratitude by bestowing endless favours upon you.  لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ['I will indeed multiply you more ...']* is the excellence of eloquence and concinnity in that 'When I would increase you as a result of the gratitude I would endlessly grant even more things - When I would grant increase will you not be grateful for it? When you are grateful for it then I would multiply it all the more' so in this way it is a fountain of abundance that has been granted us.  In this relation I would mention some Prophetic Ahadith:  

Narrated Amr bin Shuayb from his father from his grandfather who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said 'Indeed Allah loves to see the results of his favors upon His Servants.'

(Tirmidhi, Abu Isa Muhammad.  'Jami` at-Tirmidh: v'.  Tr. Abu Khayal.  Darussalam, 2007.  173, 174).

However this subject concerns different aspects and different stages.  To see the effects of the favours opens up many different subjects to us.  Certain elders and sages have passed who applied this to actuality.  The effect of a favour would appear upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ by his doing exactly as was done by Allah.  This is also a form of gratitude.  Allah granted him every kind of bounty and then he channelled all of that bounty with thanks to the people who had nothing or very little.  The Holy Prophet would also wear very expensive gowns of great quality that were gifted to him and also offered them to others as gifts.  These are all various expressions of beneficence.  Its effects appear according to the temperament of each person but remember that this effect should appear as a result of contemplating the grace of Allah.

The Promised Messiah states:

Your real gratitude is in God-awareness and purification.

(Ahmad, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam.  28 December 1897.  'Malfuzat: i'.  78).

Gratitude has a deep bond with God-consciousness and purity, because the glorious pinnacle of gratitude is manifested through God-consciousness.

* When your Lord declared 'If you are thankful I will indeed multiply you more but if you are ungrateful then My wrath is very severe.'
