Friday Sermon
Khutba Juma
Description
Do you enjoin others to do good and neglect yourselves while you read the Book? Will you never understand? Seek help with fortitude and Prayer; this indeed is hard except for the chivalrous. Who are certain of the meeting with their Lord and that to Him shall they return. ('The Holy Quran'. al-Baqarah [The Heifer]: 45 - 47). Here in the first verse the Jews and the Jewish clerics are specifically addressed. A huge number of the Jewish clerics at the time when the Prophet Jesus descended to reform them were afflicted with these diseases. They did recited the Scripture but forgot to watch over themselves. One of the meanings of أَنفُسَكُمْ ['yourselves'] is one's kith and kin. So they would enjoin piety for the common folk but neglected themselves and their near and dear. One of the meanings of وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ ['while you read the Book'] is that 'Beware! You know the state you are in is rejected by the Book. So will you never use your intellect?' The next verse addresses all the Muslims and especially the Muslims. وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ['And seek help with fortitude and Prayer;'] has 2 meanings which are applicable simultaneously. One meaning is to pray for patience and to pray for Prayer and the second meaning is to pray patiently and through Prayer. The following verse reveals that neither patience nor Prayer is a burden for those in thrall. The enthralled are those who hope for a meeting with their Lord and are sure to be returned to Him. Liqa has 2 meanings because some are summoned to answer for their actions and one Liqa intends to see [another] when Allah the Almighty shows Himself and sees them in turn. The believers because of their actions never know for sure if they would definitely be forgiven. They hope for Liqa and think that Allah would grace us with the opportunity to meet Him: ... The state of thrall is not completely free from peril until it does not bear a relationship with the Merciful God. (Ahmad, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam. 'Barahin e Ahmadiyya: v'. Anwar Ahmadiyya Machine Press, 1905. 'Ruhani Khazain: xxi'. 189). The merciful person rewards an act. Enthralled humility and submission is conducted in 2 ways. Firstly by way of an artificial relationship and then by way of a true relationship. When a mother cries for the child who can say it is artificial and when the same mother cries at tales of Make Belief that is not proper weeping. Even if a single drop is shed before Allah the Almighty with a spirit of truth it turns into heavy rainfall. As a result of sincere repentance the thing that obstructs the path of a relationship with Allah looks very unseemly. True enthrallment results in fully turning one's face away from frivolities.
