Description
O ye who believe! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance. It may be that your Lord will cancel the evil of your deeds and make you enter Gardens with flowing streams, on the day when Allah will not abase the Prophet nor those who have believed with him. Their light streaming out before them and on their right hands so they will say 'Our Lord perfect our light for us and forgive us; surely Thou hast power over all things.' ('The Holy Quran'. al-Tahrim [The Prohibition]: 9). Unless one is granted vision by the Divine light one cannot even see one's own faults and one cannot proceed towards the Divine light unless those faults are removed. This is why this Quranic verse counsels sincere and honest repentance. That which is sincere towards Allah and also makes one sincere, clean and pure. The wisdom behind mentioning the light streaming ahead of the believers in their heavens and on their right hands is that wherever one goes one would be spreading light in that direction so one theme here is that every step they take is in the right direction and it is the right hands which is a symbol of good. So where the believers are said to be granted heaven there it is mentioned that the book of their virtues will be given in their right hands. In heaven the chain of virtues will carry on. So these are people who are heading forward at each step and who develop further in acts of virtue. This verse goes on to mention that they pray for the light to be perfected. Here the ability to be nearer to Allah the Almighty has itself been called light and because this is an endless endevour so one would step ahead towards God as this light increases. With this they pray وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ['and forgive us']. One should not only seek forgiveness without having sinned. Forgiveness also holds other connotations. The meaning here is that if our light is imperfect then our inner weakness will harm the struggle and it is a prayer for the removal of these weaknesses. The Traditions of the Prophet are full of gnosis about the various aspects of the Divine light. Most often the light of one who is arrogant and does not possess the humility of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ serves to push him onto destruction. When the light is so clear as to show the harms and dangers of the path then the prayer of forgiveness is a spontaneous reaction. May Allah Almighty enable us to follow in the footsteps of the perfect guide that was the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and pray to receive Divine light the way he has taught us. .
