Friday Sermon 20 December 2002.

Description

In my Friday Sermon today, I continue with the subject of the Divine attribute of al-Ra'uf [The Compassionate].  The following verse of Sura al-Baqarah explains the subject of Allah's compassion:

And of people there is one [kind] who would sell himself to seek the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is Compassionate to [His] servants.

(The Holy Quran.  al-Baqarah [The Cow]: 208).

Byy virtue of His compassion for His servants He grants everlasting blessings to them in exchange of what are but only a few good deeds, He never burdens any soul more than its capacity and He forgives old sinners at their moment's repentance.

I do not not agree with the Allama Abu Hayyan's statement that Allah's compassion and gentleness is more encompassing than His mercy. I am ever amazed at the boundless degree and extent of Allah's mercy and indeed of the mercy of the Holy Prophet ? who is given the title of 'Mercy for all the worlds' [The Holy Quran.  al-Anbiya {The Prophets}: 108]. It was a mercy that pervaded for all living creatures, including vegetation. Without reference to any prepared notes I can cite several traditions of the Holy Prophet's ? life that illustrate his unique and matchless quality of mercy.

There are incidents of the Holy Prophet's ? benevolent mercy for children, adults, animals and vegetation and he taught us that the mercy, love and tenderness of Allah is far greater than the compassion of mother-love. I enjoin to constantly invoke blessings on the Holy Prophet ? and to pray that may Allah make us the successors of the promise of the Holy Prophet's ? intercession, a benevolence borne out of his quality of mercy.

There are extracts from the writings of the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) on the subject of mercy and compassion and on the liberating bliss that can only be acquired by negating one's self in the way of Allah, by surrendering one's each and every faculty in the way of Allah and in return acquiring an incomparable sense of pleasure and bliss that is in fact precursory to the joys and delights of Paradise.  Once Hadhrat Maulvi Noorudin Sahib accidently lost one of the Promised Messiah's essays, but he reacted without any sign of anger and said that Allah will grant him the opportunity to write another one.
